will consist of 11,000 bricks, 11 yards of
sand,
and 88 bags of cement it will give us hands-on job skills. We will also
be building an enclosed porch for Mr. David Shubert, however, we do not
expect this project to last quite as
long. Through the projects we complete, we will receive donated money
from the owners which in turn will be used for supplies, materials,
contests, and other VICA club activities. We also participated in
several service projects. We helped fill and light luminaries at Catawba

Speaking, Business Math and FBLA Creed. We can only enter three students
per event, so we had to hold local competitions. They must win 1st, 2nd
or 3rd to compete at state in these events. The following students were
our winners: |
Public Speaking:
Brittany B., Emery S. and Heather T Alternate, Raven M.
Business Math: Kirsten C., Kimberly C, Andrew F. and Katie M |
FBLA Creed- Vang Y., Becky Y. and Demetrius M, - Alternate:
Brittany R |
These students excelled in their events and we are very excited for
them as they go to regionals. They are working very hard! |
| We now have interest
groups for 30 minutes a day at our school instead of zone, so Mr.
Brotherton and I have many of the FBLA students. We have been teaching
them about public speaking. They have all had to write a two minute
speeches and are in the process of presenting them now. |
|
FBLA
participated in two community service projects this month, helping at
the Catawba Memorial
Park Luminary Lighting on Saturday, Dec. 2nd and volunteering at
Samaritan's Purse in Charlotte on Dec. 7th. Several of the FBLA students
came out to help Catawba Memorial Park light their candles for their
annual luminary lighting. It was a very touching experience and I really
think the students got a lot out of it.
|
Sixteen
of our FBLA members went down to volunteer at Samaritan's Purse last
week. We combined with the Fellowship of Christian Students. They worked
very, very hard going through hundreds of
shoeboxes and packing them for distribution. FBLA and FCS together
donated 55 boxes to Operation Christmas Child. This was a great
character building experience for the students. The comments from
the them were very touching. They all want to go back and help again as
soon as they can. |
Sixteen
FBLA members walked in the Hickory Downtown Parade on Saturday. They
were dressed for success. They were all decked out in their business
dress with Santa Hats and candy for the kids. It was wonderful that they
were willing to brave the cold weather for this. I was so proud of them.
|
| Our FBLA Christmas Party
is this week on Friday, Dec. 15th from 3 to 4:30. We will be playing a
business gift dirty Santa game. Each student must bring a business type
gift for under $5. It will be lots of fun. There is a decoration
committee and they have already brought in the tree with FBLA colored
only decorations (their idea) and tablecloths. These students are so
motivated and willing to do everything. It is wonderful! |
| Our FBLA will be do
a gift wrapping fundraiser at Barnes and
Noble on Thursday, Dec. 21st and Friday, Dec. 22nd. We will be there
from 9 a.m to 11 p.m. both days. This is our first fundraiser and we are
really hoping to do well. |
| Thank you
so much for supporting us!!
|
| I hope all of you have a
wonderful Christmas!! |

Home Builders Association gives Funds to Maiden High
|
|
Every year, the Hickory and
Catawba Valley Home Builders Association presents a check for $1,000
to one high school construction program in Catawba County. The
recipient is determined on a rotational basis. On Wednesday,
November 15, 2006, Maiden High School was selected as this year’s
recipient.
|
|

|
During
the presentation located in the front lobby of the new Maiden High
School, representatives from the Home Builders Association including
Denise Modrick, Curtis Barlowe, Charles Curtis and Celia Abernathy
presented Ray Hensley, construction technologies teacher, with a
check for his program. Also on hand were Maiden High Principal
Dwayne Finger and Traci Lytle, career development coordinator for
Catawba County Schools. |
|
Hensley provided the guests with
a tour of the Construction Technologies Department. They viewed the
students’ current project: two wood-framed storage sheds.
As
a student-selected project, Hensley’s students determined materials
cost and are now in the final construction of the sheds -- which
have both already been sold.
|
 |
|
Thanks to the support of
organizations like the Hickory and Catawba Valley Home Builders
Association, students of Catawba County Schools will continue to
gain the necessary job skills through relevant, hands-on projects.

Jacobs Fork Middle
School FBLA Induction Ceremony |
 |
|
|
|
The
first ever Jacobs Fork
Middle School Chapter of FBLA began the
year
with an Induction Ceremony and
Officer Installation last week, Oct. 16th. There were over 200
in attendance with 70 of the 86 members there and their families.. The students
were all dressed to a tee in full business dress.
We were so proud of them. We gave them dress code guidelines for
business dress and most of them followed it down to the closed toed
shoes. They looked so sharp.
The officers were installed through a candlelit ceremony on the stage
in the Jacobs Fork Cafeteria. The ceremony came after a full
Italian meal. Students from the Granite Falls Middle School
Chapter of FBLA put on a “What
not to Wear” fashion show and served the food.
All the
students were inducted with a certificate and pledge.

Kim Sherrill from Frye Regional Medical Center spoke on the
“Think Pink” Breast Cancer campaign
which
FBLA kicked
off on Thursday, Oct. 12th. This gave the
fundraiser real meaning to the students and parents. On October 12th,
half the school was pink, it was great. The staff really
got involved and supported the cause. Many of the FBLA members
made their own Breast
Cancer and "Think Pink" t-shirts. They were very creative. I
have attached pictures of some of the students who made their
shirts. The Members started a pink bracelet sell on that day and
in two weeks, have sold almost all of the 1000
bracelets.
They will all wear pink again on Thursday, October 26th
to end the campaign. Part of the money raised from this event
went to Ms. Leah Watts who ran in the “Race for the Cure” on
Sat. Oct 21st and the rest will be given to our assistant
principal, Jessica Minton-Cable who is walked in the Breast
Cancer 3-Day walk in Atlanta.

Jacobs Fork Middle
School
Starts
New FBLA Chapter
|
|
It's Leslie Farris
from JFMS. I just wanted to let you know how excited the
students are here at JFMS to start FBLA this year, and not to
mention, me, Jeff and Vicki. We now have 77 members who have
joined and paid their state and national dues. I think that will
be the biggest middle school chapter in the state. At conference
last year, the largest MS chapter was 64 members. I am so super
excited about this. We had our first meeting last Tuesday from 3
to 4:30 and we had 55 members. All the rest were on sports teams
and couldn't stay. It was a great meeting.
|
|
We
elected our officers at the meeting and was able to take 5 of
them to the regional Fall Leadership Conference this weekend. We
were the only middle school that was there. The officer
training this weekend really got them pumped up. All the way
home, they had their notebooks out and were brainstorming about
what they wanted FBLA to do this year. |
|
We are beginning our first service project this Thursday,
the "Think Pink" breast cancer campaign. We are urging
the whole school to wear pink on Thursday, the 12th and the
26th to kick off and end the campaign. The members are
really excited about this. Kim Sherrill, is going to speak about
breast cancer to the members and parents at our induction
ceremony next week so the kids will learn about this service
project and what it means. I have ordered 1000 pink bracelets to
sell. If we sell them all, we will make $750 for the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer foundation. Our assistant principal is
walking a 60 mile walk for the foundation in a couple of weeks,
so we are going to present the $$ to her to take.

FRED T FOARD MASONRY
CLASS SERVICE PROJECTS |
|
Instructor Rick Greene and his Masonry II and III classes at
Fred T. Foard are participating in three service projects this
year. They will be building a 120 foot lattice wall for someone
in the community and will take approximately the whole school
year. They will also be building an enclosed porch. This will
give hands-on job skills for students. Through the
projects they complete, they will receive donated money from the
owners which in turn will be used for supplies, materials,
contests, and other VICA club activities. They will also be
participating in helping fill and light luminaries at Catawba
Memorial Park. This is for community service. Another
thing the club is planning on doing is raking leaves for the
elderly and others who cannot do it themselves.

begin learning a trade using a system that combines on-the-job training
and related technical classroom instruction. Qualified students must
be a junior or senior with at least a 2.0 GPA, have a good citizenship record, be recommended
by at least two teachers and one counselor, and be willing to make a
firm commitment to the opportunity.

Teaching Internships
|
|
This semester Catawba County Schools have 60 teaching interns from
our five high schools. These interns applied to do this based on
having an interest in being future educators or working in a public
service capacity. The interns are doing a great job thus far. We
have students placed in elementary settings, middle school settings,
and in our high schools. They are working in all areas of teaching
(math, language arts, science, social studies, particular grade
levels of interest, arts, theatre, PE, CTE classes, etc…). Wherever
their interest is – that’s where we try to place them to get the
most of their experience. Interns are working one-on-one with
students, in small groups, doing various clerical duties, assisting
with student projects/assignments, and helping the teachers in a
variety of settings/duties. The students have many individual
assignments to complete throughout the internship (time sheets, 3
evaluations by their teacher, a final project/paper, journaling /
reflecting on their experience interning, researching educational
articles, interviews with teachers, observations in other class
settings, putting up a bulletin board, etc…). Interns and their
coordinator meet three times during the semester at each school to
discuss their internship experience, educational issues, case
studies. Students earn credit toward graduation for completing
their internship and required assignments.
|
|
Summer
Internships
|
|
The
internship coordinators in the Career Technical Education Department
of Catawba County Schools had a very successful summer working with
208 interns from our high schools. Duke Energy and Catawba
Valley Medical were two of the business partners offering internships
this summer. Other internships were completed in criminal
justice, child care, libraries, entertainment, assisted living
facilities, and the YMCA.
|
|
The
Duke Energy interns worked with Mike Butler and other Duke Energy
personnel.
There were 6 from Catawba County and 6 from Lincoln County. Mr.
Butler placed them in settings of their
interest such as computer engineering, mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, environmental engineering, nuclear
engineering, meteorology, etc…We took various
tours including Plant Marshall Steam Station, Cowans Ford Dam,
Maguire Nuclear Power Plant, Charlotte Corporate Headquarters.
Mr. Butler arranged for various speakers to come and talk about
their job, the education required, and their experiences as
engineers. There were some hands-on activities such as a challenge
to see which team could build the tallest tower out of the materials
provided, constructing a boat out of aluminum foil and seeing how
many nails it would hold before it sank. It was a great
experience for the students.
|
|
We want to congratulate all the
students who participated this summer and hope they had a wonderful
learning experience.

Pansey Helderman, was intended to let students see how
various agencies must work together in response to a crime
scene, as well as let the students get some hands-on experience.
The day-long event involved seventeen different
agencies/departments. These included: Catawba
Rescue, Catawba County EMS, Emergency Operations Command Center,
Catawba Fire Dept., Catawba Fire Marshal, Catawba Police Dept.,
Carolina's Medical Center and Med-Air, Conover Police Dept. and
their Special Response Unit, Catawba County Sheriff's Office, NC
State Highway Patrol Air Unit, Catawba County STAR and Traffic
Team, Catawba County K-9 unit, Cross Carolina Body Removal
Service, Skeets Wrecker Service, Catawba Tavern, Claremont Fire
Dept., and Sherrills Ford Fire and Rescue.
Each of the criminal justice students was
assigned to work with one of the professionals throughout the
day. In addition to the Criminal Justice class, Allied
Health students from Bandys and Bunker Hill were invited to
provide triage care for the "injured accident victims,"
giving additional authenticity to the event.

Allied Health Students Practice CPR
Students enrolled in Allied Health Science II classes at
Bandys, Bunker Hill, Foard, and St. Stephens High Schools recently
got the chance to learn proper CPR (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation) techniques. These senior-level students
are planning on careers in the healthcare field. They will begin their clinical experiences in
a healthcare facility later this month and must know
proper CPR techniques before they can begin.
In addition to the
skills needed to properly administer CPR, added emphasis was also
placed on the character trait of co-operation since healthcare
requires extensive teamwork.
Health Science
teachers Paulette Sigmon, St. Stephens High; Vickie
Travis, Bunker Hill High; Lisa Hefner, Foard High;
and Cathy Hefner, Bandys High accompanied their
students to this CPR training exercise held at Abernathy
Laurels. The
students' CPR certifications were awarded by the American Heart
Association.
