Health Team Relations Class Presents a Mock Trial |
Paulette Sigmon's freshmen Health Team Relations class and two
students from Hollis Whalens Honors English class recently
joined together to research and present a mock trial.
The HTR students
were divided up into two groups and two HE students worked with
each group. Their assignment: A man, Mr. Smith was diagnosed
with terminal cancer. He left his high paying job to spend the
last few months with his family. But, he survived and is forced
to work at a much lower paying job because he can not find
another job with the same pay. He is now suing his doctors for
money lost. Mr. Smith felt his doctors were negligent and
because of their diagnosis is now unable to support his family.
The students
really enjoyed this activity. They really became involved and
very passionate about their arguments. Students have requested
to do this again before the end of the year. The HTR class would
like to thank Mrs. Whalen and her students for getting them
started and pointing them in the right direction. The students
felt their arguments were more effective because of the help
they received from Mrs. Whalen and her students. |

Sweetwater First
Graders Visit New Greenhouse at Bunker Hill High |
|
 |
On April 4, 2008 the first
graders of Sweetwater Elementary School toured the new
greenhouse at Bunker Hill High School. The students were
accompanied by teachers, Mrs. McGee, Mrs. Whisnant, and TA
Ms Thompson with
parent volunteer Ms Tabith Hull. The students were given
a tour of the greenhouse by the FFA students in Mr.
Montgomery's Animal Science and Ag Mechanics classes.
The
students had the opportunity to observe plants growing in
the greenhouse as well as the new 500 gallon fish tanks
which held goldfish. The students were very interested in
the fish in which one first grader asked "do they always
race like that" as they swam in the tank. Mr. Montgomery,
Agriculture Teacher, demonstrated the automated exhaust fan
in the greenhouse.
Each 1st grade student planted a pumpkin
seed into a flat which was taken back to Sweetwater for the
students to continue to see the seeds sprout and form into
plants. Each FFA student was assigned five students in
which they provided each 1st grader with apple juice and
gummy animals as a treat. The 1st graders really enjoyed
the treats. Each 1st grader was given a picture of a fish
to color when they returned to Sweetwater to review their
field trip. Each 1st grader was given an airplane plant to
take home in order to remember their field trip.
This field
trip culminated the studies of plants and animals by the 1st
graders and they will plant a garden at Sweetwater as part
of their assessment from this unit of study. The FFA
students were expanding their leadership skills in
communication and planning.

Bunker Hill FFA Chapter
Celebrates
National FFA Week 2008 |

|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
Claremont, North Carolina, Bunker Hill FFA Chapter celebrated
National FFA Week Feb. 16-23, 2008. Blue Jackets, Bright
Futures is the theme this year and it embodies all the
best about FFA members, from the most recognizable symbol of the
organization, the blue corduroy jacket, to the best ideals and
traditions of national life, gold standards. Nearly half a
million members around the nation will participate in National
FFA Week activities at the local and state levels.
The
focus of National FFA Week is to tell America about the great
opportunities available for all youth. From its beginnings in
1928 as the Future Farmers of America, the National FFA
Organization today reaches out to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and
the Virgin Islands. FFA is committed to developing character
and leadership skills and preparing members for a lifetime of
civic leadership and career success.
As a part of
National FFA Week, Bunker Hill FFA Chapter members conducted the
following special events:
·
Information Bulletin
Board for Main Hall
·
Provided
refreshments for the Bunker Hill Staff
·
Provided a North
Carolina “Agriculture Counts Information sheet to each staff
member
·
Ran a membership ad
on the school TV
Bunker Hill
FFA Chapter members are the leaders of tomorrow. They are
well-mannered, perceptive and willing to help others through
community service such as providing fruit baskets during the
holidays to local nursing homes, and the construction of a new
greenhouse at BHHS. They are success-oriented students who are
driven to achieve their goals. Just as the blue jacket is a true
icon of FFA, the members set the gold standard for young leaders
throughout the nation.
National FFA
Week is sponsored by Case IH as a special project of the
National FFA Foundation. The Foundation is the fundraising arm
of the National FFA and supports programs by working with
sponsors to raise funds for scholarships that are awarded to

Blood Drive
Sponsored by SSHS Allied Health 2 Class
SSHS had a very
successful blood drive on 10-26-07. We had 129 people
present to donate, 77 were first time donors and collected
115 productive units of blood. Each unit will save three
adult lives or six children's lives.
The staff did
an excellent job of continuously informing students to eat
well and drink plenty of fluids. So the blood donation
experience was successful for these students. Ms Deanna
Taylor, SSHS principal, was the first in line to donate
blood. Many other staff members donated and/or planned their
day so their students could participate.
The Allied
Health students sponsoring the event were:
Lindsay A. Kayte
B, Sierra A, Ashlee W, Holly W, Shantaron B, Jessica H,
Megan H, Tiffany H, Daniela V, Billie E, Katrina B, Lindsay
P, Chris M. Malea W, Haley D, Emily P.
These
students would like to thank the students, parents, staff
and especially the American Red Cross for the success of
this drive.

Dem Bones.....
@ Saint Stephens High
Each
year during the study of the Skeletal System, my AHS1 students
complete a "Bone Project". They have to make a
bone, any bone out of ANYTHING. This year my B-1 and B-4
students made some of the most amazing creations ever.
The teachers and staff have been amazed, and so was I!
They (the best of the best we had room for), were placed in the
showcase outside the library today.
I am extremely proud of them!
Check them out.

I
have some exciting news to share with you. Captain's Galley in
Granite Falls is helping
us raise money for our
Think Pink Breast
Cancer campaign
on Friday and Sat nights in
September.
The waitresses are all decked out in
pink shirts, visors,
and
pink
ribbons showing their support of the cause. One of their own
waitresses, Marie Bebber, is a recent survivor of Breast Cancer, so
this cause is very important to all who know her. The staff at
Captain’s Galley has supported Marie through her illness and
recovery.
The JFMS students are
kicking off their big “Think Pink” campaign by wearing all pink on
Friday, Sept. 14th. Their plans for the campaign include
the donation table at Captain’s Galley, a Powder-puff Fundraiser
game and selling pink inspirational bracelets.
The assistant
principal, Jessica Minton-Cable at Jacob Ford Middle,
Leslie Farris, Bonnie
Fuldner
and two other teachers
are walking 60 miles in the 3-Day Breast Cancer walk in October.
Each walker is working hard in getting donations since they are
required to raise $2,200 each. All the money raised will go
directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
For more information about how you can support this great cause or
to know more about The 3-Day walk, please check out the website at
www.the3day.org.
The campaign is
starting a little early this year for us. Our first service
event is coming up this weekend Sept. 1 - 2 at Captain’s Galley
Seafood Restaurant on 321 in Granite Falls. The owner has agreed
to let his waitresses wear pink Breast Cancer shirts on Friday
and Saturday nights in September. Our FBLA is going to set up a
table at the front to ask for donations to this wonderful cause.
There will JFMS FBLA students working both Friday and Saturday
nights. I will actually be one of the waitresses.
You
could come by and see them if you like and give them a donation.
The Seafood is great and if you don’t like seafood, they have
chicken and steaks also.

Carolina FFA Association on June 20, 2007. The award was given
during a ceremony held as part of the 79th North Carolina
FFA State Convention. The North Carolina State FFA Officer Team, as
well as Steve Troxler, North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture,
congratulated the state degree recipients. The state degree was
awarded to 275 North Carolina FFA members this year.
In order
to receive this degree, the student must meet stringent

agricultural education students to become members of the North
Carolina FFA Association and the National FFA Organization at the 79th
North Carolina FFA State Convention June 19 – 21, 2007. The
Bunker Hill FFA Chapter increased their FFA chapter membership
