Some of our Fourth
Graders have been studying the infamous pirate Blackbeard. Here are a few
facts that we have learned and some of the pictures we have drawn during our study.
Blackbeard was the nickname of
an English pirate whose real name was Edward Teach. Blackbeard was born in 1680. He
died in 1718 as the result of 25 wounds received in a hand to hand sword fight with
Captain Robert Maynard.
Piracy is the seizure of a ship by armed force.
It is a form of robbery since pirates hold no commission from a sovereign
state. A pirate is a privateer sailor.
Blackbeard's ship was named Queen Anne's
Revenge.
Blackbeard's hideout was Ocracoke Island, on
the North Carolina coast. This is the same place where his treasure was buried
.
Today, the Ocracoke Lighthouse stands guard
over Blackbeard's old haunts.
