Harriet Tubman

Composed by a fifth grader

We all know many great heroes who have done tons of great deeds,

who helped other people and met their special needs.

One of the greatest remembered heroes is Harriet Tubman who had helped free the slaves,

It was as if she was the one known as the woman who saves!

Around the year 1820 Harriet was born,

The only bad thing was, she woke up as a slave each and EVERY morn.

Around 1844 Harriet had married a man,

He was a free black whose name was John Tubman.

In 1849 Harriet was scared about getting sold so decided to run away,

With some help from a white woman, she was off on foot after it was no longer day.

By night she would follow the North Star,

It would help her in direction, and boy did it take her far!

Soon after being at Philadelphia, Harriet headed back to Maryland to help her sister and sister’s children be free,

She helped her relatives to a safe place where they could live and be.

Soon she had gone to rescue her brother and two more men,

She helped them to another place, way better than where they had been!

On her third return, she went to get her husband, but found he had another wife,

But there was no stopping Harriet, she just continued her life.

Harriet found other slaves whom she helped leave their house,

She just decided to help them since she couldn’t, after what she found out, take   her spouse.

Harriet was back to the south over and over again,

She was helping free slaves all the time and not just here and then!

Harriet used to carry a drug to use on the baby if its crying put their plan in any danger at all.

She even carried a gun which she used to threaten the others if they wanted to turn back or if they were so tired they were about to fall.

If they wanted to turn back, leave or say goodbye,

She would threaten them and warn them, “You’ll be free or die!”

Harriet went back and forth nineteen times and was very bold,

This was including a very tough trip rescuing her parents who were 70 years old.

Harriet had helped over 300 slaves become free,

If you were looking for a role model or someone to admire she’s the one it would be great for you to try to be!

Sadly Harriet died in 1913, but she died kind and clever,

And she is someone that we will admire and remember forever and ever!
