Administrative Procedure

 

SCHOOL FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES

 

 

The following Administrative Procedure is in place to safeguard the health and safety of students as they are permitted to participate in school board approved fund raising activities. These procedures are intended to provide clear directions to the schools as they address fundraising activities.

 

Elementary (K-6)

 

In compliance with Standard 6.10 of the Standards for the Accreditation of Elementary Schools (SACS) elementary students are prohibited from participating in door-to-door fund raising activities sponsored by the school. This includes the selling of items or soliciting contributions or pledges door-to-door.

 

Elementary Schools may conduct school-wide activities involving the taking of school pictures or the development and distribution of a school yearbook. In addition to pictures and yearbooks elementary schools may have ONE additional school-wide fund raising activity that does not involve door-to-door solicitation.

 

Middle Schools (7 -8)

 

In compliance with Standard 6.12 of the Standards for the Accreditation of Middle Schools (SACS) middle school students are prohibited from participating in door-to-door fund raising activities sponsored by the school or a school related organization (clubs, athletic teams). This includes the selling of items or soliciting contributions or pledges door-to-door.

 

Middle Schools may conduct school-wide activities involving the taking of school pictures or the development and distribution of a school yearbook. In addition to pictures and yearbooks, middle schools may conduct ONE additional school-wide fund raising activity that does not involve door-to-door solicitation. Clubs or athletic teams may conduct ONE additional fund raising activity. Each fund raising activity shall be limited to no more than 30 calendar days.

 

 

High Schools (9-12)

 

In compliance with the Standards for the Accreditation of High Schools (SACS) high schools may conduct school-wide fund raising activities. High Schools may conduct school- wide fund raising activities involving the taking of pictures and the development and distribution of school yearbooks.

 

In addition to pictures and yearbooks, high schools may conduct TWO other fund raising activities. This limit includes school-wide sales and individual club sales. For example, if a school chooses to have one school-wide sale then clubs, athletic teams, etc., are limited to one sale. If there is no school-wide fund raising activity, then clubs may conduct no more than two activities. Each fund raising activity shall be limited to no more than 30 calendar days.

 

All Schools

 

All Catawba County Schools students may participate (voluntarily) in fund raising activities such as car washes, bake sales, or other "service" activities, which do not require door-to-door solicitation and require students to perform a service to the school or community and are conducted outside of the defined school day.

 

APPLICATION:

 

By September 1 of each school year, the principal shall summit a list of proposed SCHOOL SPONSORED fund raising activities to the superintendent. The superintendent shall submit the proposed list to the board of education for approval in compliance with Policy 4.600.

 

All activities submitted must meet the guidelines as specified in the Administrative Procedure for School Fund Raising Activities.

 

Fund raising activities sponsored by parent groups, booster clubs, PTOs, etc. should NOT be submitted for approval.

 

Fund raising activities for humanitarian agencies (United Way, March of Dimes, Juvenile Diabetes, etc.) are not prohibited by this procedure or by board policy and are encouraged as a component of character development for students. Participation; however, should be on a voluntary basis and at no time should pressure be exerted on students to participate.
