PARENTS

Parents are an important part of the North Carolina Graduation Project. The completion of the project requires the student to utilize many sources of support. For the student to be successful, they will need support from the following people:

  • Site coordinator: Oversees the entire project process at the student’s school.

  • Faculty advisor: This teacher supports, guides, proofreads the research paper draft, and monitors the student from the beginning to the end of their journey.

  • English teacher: Supports the research, writing, and presentation skills.

  • Community mentor: Provides expertise during the completion of a product.

  • Parent/Guardian: Monitors the progress and supports the student throughout the process.

How can parents support their child?

The following is a list from the North Carolina Graduation Project Implementation Guide of some suggested ways parents can help their child stay focused and engaged in the completion of the North Carolina Graduation Project.

  • Help them remember key dates. Post a Graduation Project calendar in a prominent place in your home.

  • Stay in communication with your child’s mentor on a regular basis.

  • Do not hesitate to ask questions of the Graduation Project academic advisor, the school site coordinator, and your child’s mentor.

  • Listen to your child’s presentation. Offer information and/or suggestions that may be helpful.

  • Read your child’s research paper and offer feedback.
