A collection of 15 books is awarded to school (K-12) and public libraries located in the United States and its territories, through a competitive grant application.

Upon returning to the U.S., participants will implement an interdisciplinary impact plan drawing on their program experiences.

The North Carolina General Assembly has appropriated $15 million in grant
monies to support programs and initiatives that target students at risk of
dropping out of school. The Committee on Dropout Prevention has been charged
by the General Assembly with awarding the grants under this program. Grant

The 2008 legislative law concerning Dropout Prevention Grants has changed
significantly from 2007. One criterion to note: the law stipulates that 2007
Dropout Prevention Grant applicants CANNOT apply for a 2008 Dropout
Prevention Grant (Section 7.14.[c][3].) Only LEAs, schools, local agencies,
and nonprofit organizations that did not apply in 2007 are eligible for
these grants.

Grants will vary in amounts up to a maximum of $150,000. The grants will be
for innovative programs and initiatives that target students at risk of
dropping out of school and demonstrate the potential to be developed into
effective, sustainable and coordinated dropout prevention and re-entry
programs in middle schools and high schools. Grants will be geographically
distributed throughout the state and the eight educational regions. Priority
will be given to counties that did not receive funds in 2008. Priority also
will be given to grants serving students in local schools that have a
four-year cohort graduation rate of less than 65 percent.

To assist applicants with the application process, technical assistance
meetings have been scheduled in each of the eight educational regions.
