SOUTH KOREAN EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY

Twenty-eight South Korean engineering students are coming to Catawba County and Mill Creek Middle School needs your help! The school is seeking 28 host families for January 14th, 15th, and 16th (Martin Luther King weekend).

The students are part of an exchange program designed to help South Korean students learn more about the United States and to foster a greater friendship between the two countries.  The Korean students are chosen on the basis of their GPA (grade point average) and the results of their standardized English exam.  All students are enrolled at Kyungpook University in the South Korean city of Taegu.

South Korea has been a staunch American ally for over 50 years and has modernized and westernized during that time.  Despite the influence of thousands of U.S. service men and women visiting the country, the culture of South Korea remains very different than ours,”  says Dan Von Dohlen, one of the host organizers and Mill Creek Social Studies teacher.  “We would like to extend this opportunity for Americans to learn more about South Korea and for some of South Korea’s brightest young people to learn about the United States,” he said.

The South Korean engineering students’ schedule:

Saturday, January 14th:

12:30-1:30-Catered luncheon at Mill Creek for students and host families.

1:30- Host families responsible for students until next day.

Sunday, January 15th:

2:00-5:00-Tour of Valley Hills Mall

Monday, January 16th:

8:30 a.m. drop off at Mill Creek

5:30 p.m. pick up at Mill Creek

Tuesday, January 17th:

8:30 a.m. drop off and good bye.

Host families would be expected to house and feed the exchange students.  Host families are encouraged to share the American culture and everyday routine of American family life with the Korean students.  “We appreciate the community’s help in sharing the culture of Catawba County with a different part of the world,” says Von Dohlen.
