The Catawba County Board of Education met in regular session on March 10, 2003, at noon at Clyde Campbell Elementary School with Chairman Charlie Wyant presiding.  The following members were present:  Mr. Biggerstaff, Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Sherrill, Mrs. Butler and Mr. Sigmon. Also in attendance were Superintendent Ann Hart, Assistant Superintendents Stephen Hilton, Joyce Spencer and Nancy Yount, Finance Director Sondra Wolfe, Technology Director Terry Bledsoe, Public Information Officer/Grant Writer Sonya Gordon and Principal Walter Zahler.  Mr. Scott was not present for the meeting.

            Principal Walter Zahler conducted a school tour and then accompanied the group to the school’s cafeteria where lunch was provided. 

Upon completion of the tour and lunch, the meeting was held in the school’s media center.  The meeting was called to order and opened with a Moment of Silence followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mr. Sigmon.  The agenda was amended by Superintendent Hart to add a personnel report to the Consent Agenda. 

Public Hearing:

Superintendent Hart conducted the Public Hearing phase of the meeting for comments concerning any agenda items. No person present wished to address the Board on any agenda item.

            The following Consent Agenda items were transacted:

Personnel Requests:

*employed certified employees Jackie Armstrong, Rankin Burns, Douglas Justice and Scott Reitnour;

            *employed classified employees Mildred Beach, Lisa Corneliussen and Kathryn Dudley;

*granted leave of absence to classified employee Maiyoua Vang; 

*accepted the resignations of certified employees John Jarman and Martin Samek;

*granted the retirement requests of certified employees Andrea Long, Rebekah Martin, Judy Sigmon and Joanna Winebarger;

            *accepted the resignations of classified employees Stacy Coulter, Joseph Franklin, Jr., Nell Houser and Lenna Reinhardt;

*granted the retirement requests of classified employee Linda Caldwell; and

            *granted the reassignments of certified employee Kenneth Simmons.

The Board was also furnished a listing of substitute teachers.

            Field Trip Requests:

*Bunker Hill High School Band to Cullowhee, North Carolina, April 4-5, 2003

*Bandys High School Chorus to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, May 1-4, 2003

            There being no questions or discussion, a motion was made by Mrs. Butler and seconded by Mrs. Sherrill to approve the presented field trips and personnel requests.  The motion carried.

Public Comments:

Superintendent Hart conducted the Public Comments section of the agenda at which time no one present desired to address the Board. 

Superintendent Hart informed the Board of the upcoming Student Awards Recognition Ceremony on May 20, 2003 at the Arts and Science Center Auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m.  A reception will follow the recognition ceremony.

Three-revised Board Policies 4.3100, 4.2320 and 4.2330 were distributed to members for review due to changes based on new federal legislation.  These revisions comply with the new laws that have been implemented.  The policies will be discussed at the March 24th Board of Education meeting.

With much pride and honor, Superintendent Hart announced to the Board that Terry Bledsoe won the state Elsie L. Brumback Award in technology.  Also, winning state awards were Sharon Clark, NC School Counselor of the Year and Amanda Moose, School Library Media Specialist of the Year.  Congratulations were extended to these employees.

Chairman Wyant was contacted regarding the possibility of a joint school board meeting with the Hickory City Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools.  He asked the Board for possible dates.

There being no other items of business to be conducted, Mrs. Sherrill made a motion to adjourn with Mr. Sigmon seconding the motion.  The meeting adjourned at 1:12 p.m.
