North Carolina Test of Computer Skills

(Information below is from the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction.)

In May 1991, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved new graduation standards, entitled the Quality Assurance Program. As a result, beginning with the graduation class of 2001, students must demonstrate computer proficiencies in order to receive a North Carolina diploma.

The Computer Proficiency Test is designed

bulletas a two-part assessment--The Multiple Choice Assessment and the Performance Assessment
bulletto test the competencies for grades K-8
bulletto be given during the 8th grade year

The Multiple Choice Assessment:

bulletPaper and Pencil test
bulletTakes approximately 1.5 hours
bulletIs a multiple choice test of approximately 70 questions
bulletCovers computer competencies for grades K-8
bulletCompetencies include:

Word Processing, Database, Spreadsheet, Telecommunication, Ethical Behaviors, Graphics, Hardware, Software, and other related computer vocabulary and terms

bullet20% database
bullet15% spreadsheet use
bullet15% telecomputing
bullet8% ethics
bullet7% societal impact
bullet5% terms/operating/care
bullet5% keyboarding techniques
bullet5% curriculum software use

The Performance Assessment:

bulletTests students on how well they can use a computer as they demonstrate their skill in working with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
bulletThe test is divided into four parts:
bullet10 minutes to type a document
bullet10 minutes to edit a file
bullet25 minutes to answer questions by sorting and searching a prepared database--(includes being able to use database terms to describe steps taken to find the answer)
bullet15 minutes to use a prepared spreadsheet and find answers to questions

At Newton-Conover Middle School, our students take the North Carolina Test of Computer Skills when they are in the 8th grade.

I studied and I passed !!!!!!!

If the student passes both parts (assessments) of the North Carolina Test of Computer Skills during his/her 8th grade year, then he/she has met the graduation requirement and does not take the test again. Students that do not pass this State Computer Test will have additional opportunities to retake the necessary part(s) at Newton-Conover High School.
