        Come fly with us in our time machine to a place where a
        new country is being formed.  Transform yourself into an
        English settler who helped to colonize South Africa.  In
        your time machine you will travel through South Africa's
        history, log your adventures of its colonization, and the
        beginning of Apartheid.

 
Apartheid to the Dutch Afrikaners means "apartness."  The
Dutch and the English both tried to settle South Africa as
their own colony. Eventually the English were able to take
control.  In 1948, the Afrikaner National Party implemented
laws used to separate the white minority and the black
majority.  The whites used many laws or policies to
discriminate and control the colored majority.

Are you ready to start?  Get into your machine, set your dates
to: EARLY 1800 SOUTH AFRICA, make sure your flux capacitor is ..... fluxing....., get your speed up to 88 miles per hour, and  TAKE OFF!!!

Of course it would be impossible to visit everyday of the
past.   We are going to focus on the early settlement of
South Africa and a few of the important laws passed during Apartheid.  Hopefully this will help you gain a broader understanding of Aparthed without getting too bogged
down in the political aspect.

You will divide up in groups of 3:
    1)  Visit a few sites to learn about how South Africa was
            settled and how Apartheid began.

    2)  Make a brief timeline with specific dates.

3)  You will use Microsoft Power Point to make a
          presentation about the early settlement of South
          Africa and the beginning of Apartheid.

4)  In your presentation you will explain what the following
            laws mean and a brief description of how they
            affected the colored majority of South Africa:

• Natives Land Act
• Mixed Marriages Act
• Group Areas Act
• Pass Laws
• Separate Amenities Act
• Bantu Education Act

 
5)  Your group will determine which law YOU feel
        affected the black and colored society the most.
        Use a graphic organizer to brainstorm your ideas.
        Once your decision has been made, neatly re-write
        or type your final graphic organizer on a clean sheet
        of paper or poster board.  You must use this after your
        computer presentation to persuade the class which
        law you felt was most affective in controlling the
        black and colored society.

  6)  With your graphic organizer, your group must make an
         example of the law you have selected. Your idea of
         the example must be approved by your teacherbefore
         you begin.

   1) Print out the Timeline Form and follow the directions.
        Once you have collected the information needed, your
        group should use a separate sheet of paper to make a
        timeline adding detailed facts about each event.
        Remember that your facts must be IN YOUR OWN
      WORDS.

 2)  Convert your research information into a Power Point
        presentation.  Use the Story Board Form to organize
        your main points and notes.   *Remember that Power
        Point is used as an outline for your presentation -
       NOT a display for your research.  You should have
        the main ideas of your topic displayed on your project,
        but the "meat" of the topic should be presented by
        your group members.

 3)  Design your Power Point presentation.  Be sure to keep
        the following in mind:

• Put only the MOST important information on the slides.
• Each slide will be drawn out EXACTLY BEFORE your group is allowed on the computer.

• Each presentation should consist of no more than 10-12 slides.
• Be sure to include a title slide and a table of contents slide.
• Remember to choose 3 to 4 basic "matching" colors and stick with them.

• Clip art and sound are GREAT!  Just don't over do it!
• Only use clip art that is appropriate to the topic of the slide.
• You are NOT to take information directly from the Internet, books, or any references you may use.

• Always put the information IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!

        It is not ethical or legal to plagiarize.

 4)  After your group has completed the Power Point project,
        brainstorm to determine which law you feel most
        affected the blacks and coloreds of South Africa.  Use a
        graphic organizer to arrange your ideas.  You may type
        out your graphic organizer or make a poster of your
        ideas.

 5)  Create a product to demonstrate the law you chose as
        being the most affective in controlling or regulating
        blacks or coloreds.  This product should be your design
        based on the information you found about the chosen
        law.  Remember that your ideas must be approved by
        your teacher before you begin.

 6)  You will present your project to the class.  Do not read
        your notes, but use them as a guide.  All students must
        participate in the development of all parts of the
        project and presentation.

    Apartheid became known as an extreme form of discrimination and control of the majority race.  Once
the many laws and policies were passed, like the ones
you have just studied, a chain of events occurred
that changed the lives of every South African forever.
Many protests, boycotts, demonstrations, and violent acts exploded throughout South Africa and the world.  Many countries became involved in Apartheid and
its effects rippled throughout every continent.  Many
political parties formed to help protest against Apartheid,
which produced several strong black leaders.   Apartheid
is a very complex topic of study but hopefully through
this WebQuest you have learned about South Africa's settlement, how Apartheid began, and a basic understanding
of the few laws under this harsh system of government.
